Sketchbooks, 1855-1860.

This collection consists of five sketchbooks of drawings made by Kilburn between 1855 and 1860. The books contain pencil and pen-and-ink sketches of street views and buildings, mostly of southern and western towns, such as Richmond, Va., Wilmington, N.C., Charleston, S.C., Macon, Ga., Savannah, Ga., Mobile, Ala., New Orleans, La., Chicago, Ill., Louisville, Ky., St. Louis, Mo., and Detroit, Mich. There are also a few New England views. Some are unfinished pencil sketches, but many are finished in ink and with much detail.

Kilburn, Samuel Smith

Samuel Smith Kilburn (1831-1903) was born in Boston, Mass., and was a successful artist and wood engraver in that city for many years. He travelled widely in the United States just before the Civil War, visiting several cities and towns to make sketches. His work appeared generally in _Gleason's Pictorial Magazine_ and _Ballou's Pictorial_. He continued to draw and engrave throughout his life and was noted for the excellence of his work.
